India’s Universal Immunisation Programme Sets Global Benchmark

India’s Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) has emerged as a global model for large-scale public health delivery, achieving remarkable milestones in disease prevention and vaccine coverage. According to recent government data, full immunisation coverage in the country has surged from 62% in 2015 to an impressive 98.4% as of January 2026, reflecting sustained policy focus and grassroots implementation.

The UIP, one of the world’s largest vaccination programmes, annually covers around 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.54 crore infants, providing free protection against multiple vaccine-preventable diseases.Over the decades, India has successfully eradicated smallpox, eliminated polio, and controlled maternal and neonatal tetanus—achievements that underline the programme’s global significance.

Recent initiatives, including the rollout of indigenous vaccines such as the Tetanus-Diphtheria (Td) vaccine and expansion of HPV vaccination, demonstrate India’s growing self-reliance in vaccine production and commitment to tackling emerging health challenges. The country now produces nearly 60% of the world’s vaccines, further strengthening its leadership in global immunisation efforts.

Government campaigns like Mission Indradhanush and digital platforms such as U-WIN and eVIN have played a critical role in reaching underserved populations and improving monitoring systems.

Public health experts note that India’s success lies in its extensive healthcare network, strong cold-chain infrastructure, and community-level outreach. With ongoing efforts to eliminate diseases like measles and rubella, India’s UIP continues to set benchmarks for other nations striving to achieve universal immunisation and improved child health outcomes.
